Using Jumpcut on a Linux Desktop
Hey, some progress on this front. Yes, it looks like Adobe’s Flash Player 9 won’t arrive for Linux until sometime in 2007. However, we’d still love to see you, your family and your friends here using and enjoying Jumpcut. So here’s a solution a Linux Desktop user here at Jumpcut found over on Howtoforge. While that article’s title is a bit misleading (you will be running the Windows binaries for Firefox and the Flash Player 9 under WINE, not natively), at least you can run Flash 8 & 9 apps (not just Jumpcut’s) until Adobe releases the Real Thing(tm). Note that we really cannot actively support this use of Linux, WINE and Flash, but felt you should know about it.
From what information we’ve gathered (and oh-so-limited testing), here’s some random notes for you.
- Requires a 32-bit OS (64-Bit OS unsupported)
- We’ve “tested”: WINE: 0.9.20 (other versions may or may not work)
- OSes: So far, Gentoo 2006.1 and Ubuntu’s Dapper Drake have been reported as working.
Thanks to “mariuz” on HowtoForge for figuring this solution out.
My movie doesn’t play after I publish
A few users have had an issue where their movies didn’t play after they published, but they appeared to be fine inside the editor. If this happens to you, here’s what to do:
1. Delete the problematic clip from both the movie and from the My Stuff section.
2. Upload the clip again
3. Remix your movie and re-insert the clip.
This is a known issue that we’re working on.
How to disable emails from Jumpcut
If you don’t want to receive comment notifications or if you do not want to receive community emails from Jumpcut.com in the future, go to your profile page (http://www.jumpcut.com/prefs or click [edit profile]) and uncheck the boxes next to “Send me Jumpcut updates and newsletters” and “Send me an email when someone remixes or comments on my stuff”.
Your submitted movie doesn’t appear in a group
If you submitted a movie to a group, and it does not appear in the group immediately, then the group is moderated. This means the owner of the group will have to approve the movie before it appears in the group. You can always leave a comment on the group page asking the moderator to approve your submission.
I’m having trouble installing Flash
On Windows, you need to have Admin privileges on your machine to install the Macromedia Flash Player for Internet Explorer. If you’re having trouble working this out, we recommend that you install Firefox. The Flash Player should install easily.
Movies aren’t playing at all (black screen)
If movies aren’t playing, it may be due to a cached file on your computer. To fix this problem, clear the cached browser files:
In Internet Explorer, click Tools, then Internet Options. Click the Delete Files button in the Temporary Internet files section.
In Firefox, click Tools, then Options. Click the Privacy section, then the Cache tab. Click the Clear Cache Now button.
I want to change my profile image
If you are trying to figure out where to upload your profile image, go to http://www.jumpcut.com/prefs or click [edit profile]. In the section labeled My Image, click Browse and select the image that you want to use. After selecting the image, click Upload and you will now have your own custom profile image.
Some of my Flickr sets don’t show up
If you use HTML in your flickr set names, they will not appear in the list of Flickr sets during import. To correct this, remove the html from your flickr set names, then attempt to import from Flickr again.
Some of my Flickr images weren’t imported
Images with certain tags won’t be imported. Make sure all of the tags on your Flickr images are at least three characters long, and do not contain special characters.
My files take forever to upload
Video files can be pretty large and may take some time to upload, especially over a slow connection. However, make sure you’re not trying to upload something larger than 100MB. If you are, the upload process will appear to keep going, but the upload will not complete. Check your file sizes before you upload. We’re working on a fix for this.
