Audio is being removed from my mobile video

Posted in Upload, Mobile, Audio by support on the May 16th, 2006

If you’ve uploaded a mobile video file and the audio was removed from the clip, most likely this is because your device is using the 3G2 video format. This format uses a Qualcomm audio format we don’t support yet. The clips will still play correctly, but there will be no audio.

We hope to be supporting videos with this format very soon.

Part of my video isn’t being uploaded

Posted in Upload by support on the May 16th, 2006

When uploading some 640×480 MPEG-4 video files, only the top left 320×240 of the video frame will be visible after upload. This is a known issue with our video decoding process. If you’re experiencing this issue, you can try converting your video to 320×340 or another format before uploading.

My video doesn’t show up in a group

Posted in Groups, Contests by support on the May 25th, 2006

You may have submitted a clip (i.e. a single video file) instead of a movie. These are actually different things on Jumpcut. Check the Clips section of the group for your video. If it’s in there, you submitted a clip.

You need to turn your clip into a Jumpcut Movie and resubmit in order to have it show up on the Group’s Main Page.

1. Hit Remix on your clip
2. Once you’re in the Editor, click Publish
3. On the Publish Page, choose the group you want to send to.
4. If you’re submitting to a contest, set your submissions to Private - Not Remixable.

How to change the thumbnail image for your movie

Posted in Editing by support on the May 25th, 2006

The thumbnail image for a Jumpcut movie is automatically selected from the first video clip or photo in the movie’s timeline. If you want to change the thumbnail, here’s what to do:

1. Find a video clip that has a thumbnail you like (you may have to upload a new one)
2. Open the movie you want to change in the Jumpcut Editor
3. Go to the +Add tab and drag the new clip from step 1 into first spot in the timeline
4. Zoom in (press z or click on the green +) and drag the clip handles together to set the clip duration to zero
5. The clip won’t play since it has a duration of zero, but the system will select a new thumbnail

Note: We capture thumbs 10 frames in, so consider that if you’re creating a clip specifically for a thumbnail

Also Note: If you don’t have a clip with a thumbnail you like, you can use a photo, but the shortest duration for photos is .01 seconds, so it will play for .01 seconds at the beginning of your movie.

We’re working on making this easier, but for now, this is the way to do it.

How to prevent audio from fading out at the end of your movie

Posted in Audio, Editing by support on the May 25th, 2006

The audio automatically fades out at the end of Jumpcut movies that are more than 30 seconds long. This was done intentionally to avoid the jarring audio cut-out very often heard at the end of videos posted online. We realize that some users don’t want the audio to fade out, so here’s a way to eliminate it:

1. Open your movie in the editor
2. Click the +Add tab
3. Find the “Useful stuff from Jumpcut” folder in Your Media
4. Drag a black slug into the timeline at the end of your movie
5. Set the duration of the slug to 5 seconds on the Clip tab
6. Save your movie

I want to split my video clips into smaller pieces

Posted in Upload by support on the June 28th, 2006

Currently Jumpcut doesn’t allow files larger than 100 meg. Quite a few of our users have larger files that they want to use on Jumpcut.

In order use a video clip that’s larger than 100MB, you’ll first need to break up the file into multiple clips. Each clip can then be uploaded to Jumpcut individually.

One utility you can use to split up your clips is Easy Video Splitter. This utility is available on the web, for a 7 day trial, at the following URL:

My mouse pointer disappears in the editor

Posted in Editing by support on the July 17th, 2006

If you’re editing a movie and your mouse pointer disappears, you’ll need to click on the Playhead and drag it in any directin to restore your mouse pointer. You can right-click to show the position of your mouse pointer. This is a known issue that we’re working on.

Using Jumpcut on a Linux Desktop

Posted in Flash, Linux by support on the September 1st, 2006

Hey, some progress on this front. Yes, it looks like Adobe’s Flash Player 9 won’t arrive for Linux until sometime in 2007. However, we’d still love to see you, your family and your friends here using and enjoying Jumpcut. So here’s a solution a Linux Desktop user here at Jumpcut found over on Howtoforge. While that article’s title is a bit misleading (you will be running the Windows binaries for Firefox and the Flash Player 9 under WINE, not natively), at least you can run Flash 8 & 9 apps (not just Jumpcut’s) until Adobe releases the Real Thing(tm). Note that we really cannot actively support this use of Linux, WINE and Flash, but felt you should know about it.

From what information we’ve gathered (and oh-so-limited testing), here’s some random notes for you.

  • Requires a 32-bit OS (64-Bit OS unsupported)
  • We’ve “tested”: WINE: 0.9.20 (other versions may or may not work)
  • OSes: So far, Gentoo 2006.1 and Ubuntu’s Dapper Drake have been reported as working.

Thanks to “mariuz” on HowtoForge for figuring this solution out.

My movie doesn’t play after I publish

Posted in View by support on the September 23rd, 2006

A few users have had an issue where their movies didn’t play after they published, but they appeared to be fine inside the editor. If this happens to you, here’s what to do:

1. Delete the problematic clip from both the movie and from the My Stuff section.
2. Upload the clip again
3. Remix your movie and re-insert the clip.

This is a known issue that we’re working on.
